This is ham salad wrapped in lettuce and stuffed into an enigma.
How on earth is one supposed to slice a head of lettuce filled with ham salad without making a disgusting mess fit only for a goat?
And if one doesn't have a goat, what then?
Here's the 1962 recipe for Miracle Whip's Deviled Lettuce:
Hollow out a head of lettuce (In 1962, lettuce meant iceberg lettuce) and fill it with this mixture: one 8-oz. package of Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese, 1/2 cup of Miracle Whip, one 2 1/4-oz. can of deviled ham, 1 cup of sliced celery, 1/4 cup of chopped green pepper, 2 tablespoons of chopped pimento and 1 tablespoon of chopped onion. Firmly wrap and chill. Slice and serve topped with the sparkling flavor of marvelous Miracle Whip.
Goats really like sparkling flavor.
