The original Dunkin Donuts

Yesterday, I drove by the original Dunkin Donuts location on Route 3A in Quincy, Massachusetts. It was recently retro-renovated to look more like it did when it opened in 1950.

Alas, I didn't have time to stop and get a glazed stick, my favorite Dunkin treat.

Vintage Neon: The Goldenrod, York Beach, Maine

The Goldenrod has been making salt water taffy in York Beach, Maine since 1896.These neon signs haven't been there since then, but they are vintage treasures.

Goldenrod's sells other types of candy, too. They also serve breakfast and lunch. And homemade ice cream.

It's one of my favorite places.

1950s menu from Woolworth's lunch counter

If you're too young to remember Woolworth's, then you're too young to remember the wafting aroma of the hamster cages. They were in the pet department in the back of Woolworth's stores, along with goldfish and those little pet turtles that are illegal now. It was one of the most comforting, welcome smells of my childhood. You kids don't know what you're missing.
