The headline for this 1957 advertisement for Rolex watches states:
There was only one Christopher Columbus
but millions have benefited from the discovery of America.
The ad forgets the millions of natives who died after being exposed to the European germs Columbus and his men brought to America with them.
Or the millions of natives who were killed in Europe's land grab in the Americas.
And, of course, one can't "discover" a land that has already been settled by others for tens of thousands of years.
I get really angry when some dismiss these ideas as "political correctedness." They are facts.
Many of us weren't taught to look at history from all sides. I'm glad that's changing. The most shameful thing we can do is ignore and forget the suffering of others.
Getting off my soapbox now to wish you a happy Columbus Day! : )
