Lysol douche ad, 1940s

There are all these old ads that show men leaving their wives because the women don't douche correctly. Or often enough.

When I come across one, my first impulse is to laugh, which is quickly followed by outrage and moral indignation.

These ads go a long way to explain the "lysol abortion" horror stories. Many of them may have been attempts at hygenic or spermicidal douching. And if lysol was supposed to be healthful, how could it be harmful as an abortifacient? The stories look very different when juxtaposed with these ads.
