This week, Philadelphians put the kibosh on plans to drape the Inquirer-Daily News Building in a massive ad for Jerry Seinfeld's upcoming film, Bee Movie -- a computer-generated family movie about a bee. The ad was to include a 50-foot inflatable bee. How freakin' cool is that?
Can you imagine the delight on the faces of children looking up at the giant cartoon-ish bee? Can you see in your mind's eye the spontaneous smiles on the faces of commuters walking by the Inquirer-Daily News Building? Can you smell the extra tax dollars garnered from the families who'd make a day out of a trip downtown to see the bee spectacle?
The Bee Movie ad was only going to be up for three weeks, yet a bunch of Philadelphia killjoys acted as though Jerry Seinfeld were suggesting melting the Liberty Bell for scrap and replacing it with a neon dollar sign.
Philadelphians don't get to have any fun. Too bad.
