From yesterday's New York Times comes a report that despite years of resistance, Brits are slowly turning on to squirrel meat. American gray squirrel meat, that is.
Mmmm. Squirrelicious.
Apparently, gray squirrels from the U.S. have spent the last century colonizing England and driving out the native red squirrels. Now there's a movement to save the red squirrels by hunting the gray ones. The rallying cry is, "Save a red. Eat a gray."
The environmental angle is working. British chefs are filling their terrines, pasties and pates with squirrel. People are eating the stuff. And Granny Clampett is vindicated.
