Actually, the NYT article quoted says those ages are the "median" ages, not average. The median IS the mean for a normal distribution, but the human age distribution is highly asymmetric. Nevertheless, the qualitative conclusion is correct - older people are far more likely to watch cable news than younger. I'm guessing

1.100 bucks/month cable bills aren't something the young under employed can afford.
2.Retired people who have few outside interests are hooked on cable news like candy.
