Thankfully, the "homemade Twinkies" from Angel Food Bakery are still available

No one in the vicinity of Chicago's Angel Food Bakery is losing any sleep over the demise of the Hostess Twinkie. Because Angel Food Bakery, on Montrose Avenue, has been making its own "homemade Twinkies" for years.

These cakes are called Airstreams and they're de-lish.

They weren't THAT good

I don't know when it happened, but at some point after my childhood, Hostess changed the recipe for their cream fillings. Perhaps it was to reduce costs. Or maybe it was to make Hostess snacks more healthful. All I know is that it's been years since I've been tempted to buy a Twinkie or Suzy Q.

Nevertheless, my heart breaks for the many people who are now out of work because Hostess closed its bakeries.
