
According to OMG facts, the first keyboards (I'm assuming the ones on very old school typewriters) jammed if letters that were next to each other were pressed in too rapid succession. So, in 1874, Christopher Sholes developed the current layout of keyboard letters to slow typists down and avoid jamming the keys.
