Sorry Paula but the custom isn't fictitious, but the Caganer is an old catalonian custom.

The wikipedia article doesn't say this (and I not sure to add, since is more a conjecture than a certainty): that the caganer is similar to the Middle Age custom of placing statues of demons, gargoyles and people engaging in sexual intercourse at the outside of church buildings --- that is, a mixture of the sacred and the profane and/or the widely spread custom (in so many cultures) of adding some imperfection to perfection.
Something in the spirit of the old zen saying "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him", to make it clear.

So, the Caganer exists, as weird and offensive it must look to USAmerican eyes.
